UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN

The skin of the face is very versatile and made up of three basic layers: the outer layer (epidermis), the mid-layer (dermis), and the subcutaneous layer.

The epidermis is made up of a combination of living and dead cells, and a waxy substance called keratin. This layer of skin can vary in thickness depending upon body location. On the face, this layer is relatively thin. This superficial layer of the skin acts in much the same way as the waxy coat on your car to protect against scratches and abrasions, chemicals and sun damage, drying out and cracking, and helps maintain a constant temperature. And, if properly cared for, it gives luster and glow to the facial complexion. An important fact to note is that there are no blood vessels in the epidermal layer. It receives its supply of fluids from the dermal layer.

The dermis is much thicker than the epidermis. This layer is made up of collagen, elastic fibers, blood vessels, and nerves. This is the layer that gives your skin its resilience and fullness. As people age, the small blood vessels in this layer become constricted due to a number of factors, including poor nutrition, injury, inflammation, and tension from stress. As the blood flow becomes reduced to the dermis, changes in moisture content, luster, and resilience of the skin become noticeable. A good example of this problem is when somebody appears to grow older over night after a terrible or taxing event. This is where acupuncture excels by relaxing and opening the small blood vessels of the face and body, which improves overall circulation.

The subcutaneous layer of the skin is made up of collagen fibers, adipose tissue, and blood vessels. This layer plays an important role by insulating the body, to help regulate temperature and give shape to facial features.
